history & c.v.
Jules Thomas was born in Wales and at the tender age of three realised she wanted to draw and paint. She was educated at Dartington College, Devon, before studying art and three-dimensional design at Kingston where she graduated with an honours degree.
Drawn to Ireland she settled at Lioscaha, a rugged townland overlooking Dunmanus Bay, which has for thirty years provided an enduring and ever-changing inspiration for her watercolour, works and oil abstracts.
As a student Jules studied interior architecture, building science, materials, lighting, acoustics and model making, a series of skills which came together when she produced and installed all the areas of the original Mizen Vision installation in the old light station.
Her latest installation work at the new Mizen Head Visitors Centre is a continuation of large scale murals which can be seen at visitor centres throughout Ireland. Her other works include -
The Jameson Heritage Centre, Middleton, Cork (mural 33’ X 13 ‘)
The Skelligs Experience, Valentia Island, Kerry (mural diorama 17’ X 12'), Killaloe Visitors Centre, Co Clare (wildlife mural 20’ X 10')
Kenmare Heritage Centre, Co Kerry (mural 15’ X 9' and model of stone) and Lullworth Cove Wildlife Centre, Dorset (wildlife mural 20' X 10’)
As well as specialising in large-scale mural installations Jules has also produced a life-size mannequin of the smuggler Murty Og O'Sullivan complete with cave at the CoAction Castletownbere Visitors Centre and a life size model and mural at the Bantry House Armada Centre.
But it is painting which is her first love and her striking works in water colours and oils can be seen in many a house and public space throughout West Cork and further afield in America where many of her works end up.
